The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963) was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963 at the close of the second Vatican Council. Concerning diocesan commissions for liturgy, music, and art it states, “For the same reason every diocese is to have a commission on the liturgy, under the direction of the bishop, for promoting the liturgical apostolate”. (Par. 45).
Under the auspices of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, subcommittees consider matters particularly related to sacred music, art and architecture, and Christian Initiation. The work of the commission and the three subcommittees is supported and guided by the Diocesan Bishop through the Office of Sacred Liturgy.
The Diocese Liturgical Commission exists as a consultative body and serves parishes by:
Assisting the Bishop with recommendations according the needs of the Diocese
· Offering workshops and classes for liturgical formation
· Acting as a rich resource for liturgical matters including RCIA, environment
· Assisting with clergy formation
· Offering training for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors
· Assist and guide parishes in matters of authentic liturgical renewal
· Assist in the preparations of major diocesan celebrations
