When the Mobile Diocese encompassed the entire state of Alabama, the Catholic Week newspaper was the official publication. After the separation of the Mobile Diocese in 1969, the Catholic Week continued to serve the newly formed Diocese of Birmingham and the Mobile Archdiocese with Msgr. Frank Wade as editor. In August of 1970, the decision was made to have an editor for the Birmingham section and another editor for the Mobile section. Father Dyer was chosen for Mobile and Father John Igoe was chosen for Birmingham.
The first issue of the One Voice was printed in January of 1971. The staff included Father Igoe, Sally Crockett, and Rose Loveitt. Sally Crockett was a fixture at the One Voice with Ann Lanzi joining the team in 1976. In 2001, Father Igoe passed away and Crockett was named managing editor. In 2004, Mary Dillard joined the team. Crockett retired in 2019 after faithfully serving the Diocese of Birmingham for over 56 years. Lanzi and Dillard continue the mission of the paper, now in its 50th year.
